No Is a Complete Sentence

And the discomfort of saying it is exactly where the work begins

You know what you want to say. The words are ready. And then someone pushes back, the room shifts, a tone changes, and what comes out of your mouth isn't what you prepared. Your body made a different call.

If that lands, keep reading. Because what happened in my Embodied Decisions workshop last month might explain exactly why.

Each participant brought a real scenario they were navigating: something live, something with stakes. A conversation they'd been avoiding. A request they didn't know how to decline. A decision that kept circling back.

Then they paired off. One person would role-play making a request specific to that scenario. The other had one job: choose whether to say yes, no, or maybe. And practice that on repeat.

Simple enough, right?

What happened in the room told a different story.

People felt uncomfortable just saying "no." Not no followed by an explanation. Not no softened by an apology. Just… no. Full stop.

These weren't people who lacked self-awareness. They were sharp, reflective, used to navigating complexity. They knew, intellectually, that no was an option, and they've used it in some contexts.

But in the body? Different story. Hearts beating faster. A flush of heat. Discomfort in the tissues, even though they were just practicing, with a kind and caring partner, completely outside the real situation.

When I reflected that back — that no is a complete sentence, and that the discomfort they were feeling was the work — something landed differently. People often default to over-explaining because it feels like we have to. Like a bare no isn't enough, or we're afraid of how it will land, or what someone might think of us.

The full range

No is a complete sentence. That doesn't mean you can't offer an explanation; sometimes the moment calls for it. What we're building is access to the full range: the no that stands alone, the no, thank you, and the no, because… and the ability to choose which one actually fits for you in any given moment.

In the next letter I share why the most self-aware people I know still get caught by these patterns, and what's actually going on beneath the surface.

The next round of Embodied Decisions is coming soon.
