Something Here Is Not Quite Right

On outgrowing the identity that got you here

There's a specific moment I see in both myself and a lot of the people I work with. You've built a life that looks exactly like success from the outside. But somewhere along the way, you got lost inside it. One day you find yourself asking: who am I in here? Is this still what I want?

You begin to question who you are without the role, the title, the identity you've been performing so competently for so long.

Who are you without the title on the door, or the letters after your name? Without being the one people call when things fall apart? Without the mission that justified the sacrifice, the identity that made the overriding of yourself feel noble, the identity that was built — quietly, over years — from being extraordinarily good at what you do? Perhaps even without the approval of the people whose opinions you've carried for years.

The role, the title, the identity fit once. Maybe it fit for a long time.

At this moment, you arrive at the edge of the identity you've been living inside. You can see it's a shape you grew into, not the whole of you. And the body has its own way of telling you. The flatness where aliveness used to be. The heaviness in your chest. The contraction in your belly. A whisper, persistent and patient: something here is not quite right.

That is scary. It's supposed to be.

The acorn doesn't know what the oak looks like from the inside. It just knows the shell it's been living in has gotten tight.

Not-knowing is a threshold

Not knowing who you are without that identity is not a gap in your self-awareness. That's a threshold.

Being in a place of not-knowing is one of the most honest places you can be. It's incredibly fertile and potent. My invitation is to stop trying to think your way out of it, and simply be in it.

If you are longing for true transformation, that happens slowly, and in the body. In the small moments when you make a decision from your own ground rather than from someone else's map. When you choose rest without having earned it first. When you let something be enough. When you return to the creative practices that remind you who you are outside of your output.

Not as peak moments, but as practice. Accumulating slowly into someone you recognize, someone you really love, and someone you are proud of.

So if you're sitting with "I don't know who I am without this" — that's not someone who is lost. That's someone who is just starting to tell the truth, and standing at the threshold of their next chapter.

Welcome. I'm here to guide you through these seasons of uncertainty, to help you develop the capacity to stay with what's emerging, and trust what's growing inside of you.

If something in this is speaking to you, I'd love to hear from you. What is the shell that's gotten tight for you? And what do you sense is waiting on the other side?
